The
Harlem Renaissance took place during a most interesting time in American
history. World War I had just ended, and African Americans migrated from
the rural South to the urban North, particularly New York City. This migration
and the rise of a group of radical black intellectuals talented in the
various arts contributed to a movement known as the Harlem Renaissance.
This movement brought unprecedented creative activity in writing, art,
and music which redefined expressions of African Americans and their heritage.
