This unit will take approximately four weeks
to complete. Much of the research and communications between
students will be done on their own time. It is advisable to
schedule time every week for them to meet during class time
to review, discuss, and plan.
Students from Language Arts classes will be working
on this WebQuest. They will select members of their team from
among their classmates. It will be their responsibility to select
the role they want to assume.
Students must have prior knowledge of the Internet.
Students should have had prior experience in
their social studies classes with identification of landforms
and environments, and people's adaptations to their surroundings
to live.
Students should have prior knowledge of MLA format.
Extended Activities Invite a curator from a local museum to present information
to the class onl Native American tribes from your area.
Have students develop a whole new tribe using the same characteristics
that they have researched for their tribe. Design a new name,
clothing, housing, transportation, art, tools, utensils, etc.
using the natural resources available in the designated area.
Students can develop a PowerPoint presentation on all aspects
of the Native American tribe that was researched to be placed
on the school's web site.
Students could write and perform a skit, including accurate scenery
and costumes, representing their tribe.
Research Native American tales. Create a booklet of stories that
were shared among the people of the tribe. After recording the
tale, write a brief description of how their habitat (natural
resources) are reflected in their tales. Now compose an original
poem, short story, or folktale reflecting nature to add to the
booklet.
