Best Practices in Using Technology in Math

Meet Phillip Pierce and David Roemer

Though Philip Pierce, from Garrett Academy of Technology, and David Roemer, from Wando High School, are from two different schools, they collaborated to form one team made up of students from both high schools and entered the robotics competition.

Phillip Pierce teaches mathematics and Project Lead the Way at Garrett Academy of Technology in North Charleston. Mr Pierce believes that students need a real-world application of the information learned in school in order to make the learning more relevant. Every year, Mr. Pierce encourages his students to participate in the FIRST-For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Competition in order to build self-confidence and motive them to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering.

David Roemer teaches Introduction to Engineering Design and Digital Electronics at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant. Both courses are academically rigorous, where students use newly acquired design/electronics skills in designing solutions to real world problems. Emphasis is placed on developing highly sophisticated analytical skills and building upon preceeding lessons to solve increasingly complex problems. Research and presentation skills are developed and used throughout both courses.

Best Practice Strategy
Students will use the knowledge gained in science, math, and engineering classes in order to create a robot that can perform assigned tasks.

Team Motto: Together We Build the Future

Robot Name: Steel Talon

Awards Won: 2004 SC Judge's Award

Students at Garrett Academy of Technology create a robot to perform tasks in order to compete in a technology competition.
