"Frederick Douglass taught that literacy is the path from slavery to freedom. There are many kinds of slavery and many kinds of freedom. But reading
is still the path."

--Carl Sagan

"Live always in the best company when you read."

--Sydney Smith

"A book lying idle on a shelf is wasted ammunition. Like money, books must be kept in constant circulation. Lend and borrow to the maximum"

--Henry Miller, novelist
(1891-1980)

Technology Integration Ideas for Media Specialists

1. Use Inspiration or Kidspiration software when discussing sequencing and characters in books.

2. Use Timeliner software to reinforce sequencing in a story after story time with students.

3. Use eChalk student email to have students correspond about favorite books with their “Book Buddies” from another classroom or school. This requires collaboration with classroom teachers, teachers at another school, and/or the computer teacher.

4. Use United Streaming Video at http://streamlinesc.org, to include clips and images in a PowerPoint presentation to supplement and enrich story time. At this site, a media specialist can find a variety of videos. For example, use clips of owls while reading fiction. This site will be available for teachers in the fall of 2005.

5. Use a digital camera to take a picture of a student holding his/her favorite book. Then have that student write about the book using Microsoft Word.

6. Run a presentation software, such as PowerPoint, through the building distribution system to show school news.

7. Use DISCUS for children’s research by accessing the web at http://www.scdiscus.org
/school.html while at school.

8. Use a presentation software such as PowerPoint to display scanned pictures in books to show to children as you read the story.

For Teacher Assistance:

9. Use eChalk or a web-authoring program such as Netscape Composer to create a webpage to collaborate and assist teachers in locating and quickly accessing topical information.

10. Using desktop publishing software, such as Microsoft Publisher, create a brochure for teachers on the math books located in the Media center. This brochure can put books in categories relating to the SC Standards so teachers can easily find books that reinforce math concepts. A feature of Follett is creating a bibliography.
