Let's take a tour back in time to June 28, 1776, to the
old palmetto-log fort now called Fort Moultrie. The spongy palmetto
logs absorbed the cannonballs of the British and helped Colonel William
Moultrie defend the fort against the attack of the British fleet. Because
of this, Col. Moultrie had the palmetto tree added to our state flag along
with the blue color of the soldiers' uniforms and the crescent shape on
their caps. This starts the beginning of SC symbols and emblems.
The SC flag, along with all of our other state symbols and
emblems, have a special meaning in our state's history. To learn about
their origins helps us to better understand the SC culture and connect
with our past.
You now have the chance to take a virtual trip back in time.
Maybe you love animals, plants, gems or music. Find out when
and why your favorite state symbols and emblems came to be on the list.
|
Your task is to surf
through the Internet links below and find picutres, sounds, music, and
information on at least 3 symbols or emblems of South Carolina. You must
also determine the origin of these symbols and explain why they came to
be on the list. You will put these symbols together into a multimedia scrapbook
to share with your class.
Please follow this list of steps:
- Make a folder
called "SCScrapbook" in your personal folder.
- Browse through
the links below to see the choices that you have for your scrapbook.
- Pictures or images
should be copied into your folder by 'right clicking' and clicking
on "Save image as". Save this image in your SCScrapbook folder but
change the name if you think you might forget what it is. Most of the
time, students are allowed to download images for classroom projects.
Check for any copyright rules and email to ask permission if you
are not sure.
- Open a Word document
and minimize while you are browsing through the links. When you
get to important information that you need, select it, and hold down Control
and then touch "C" on the keyboard to use a 'Copy' command. Release
both keys and you will have a copy of the infomation. Open your
Word document and hold down Control and touch "V" on the keyboard to paste
the information onto the document. Continue collecting information but
don't forget to SAVE this document in your "SCScrapbook" folder giving
it the title "scinformation".
- Document your sources by copying and pasting the Web
address (URL) above the information you collect on your Word document.
- Open PowerPoint
and choose a 'Design Template' that works nicely for South Carolina.
You will make a 'Title' slide, 3 slides with symbols containing
an explanation of their origin on each and a 'Credits' slide at the end.
That will total up to be 5 slides unless you choose to add more symbols.
- Summarize the information on your Word document before
you type it on your PowerPoint slides. You need this infomation to
be brief and in your own words.
