"Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.

"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world"

--Archimedes

"The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them."

--Sir William Bragg

"Most books now say our sun is a star. But it still knows how to change back into a
sun in the daytime."

--Science Quote from Child

"In this house, we OBEY the laws of thermodynamics!"

Integration Ideas for Using Technology in Science

1. Use Excel to collect data. Create graphs from the data. For example, during a unit on weather, students enter average daily temperatures for various parts of the country and graph the results. To enhance the graph, insert clipart or digital images to illustrate.

2. Use presentation software, such as PowerPoint, insert digital pictures of an organism, life cycle, or phenomenon, and show the slide(s) to generate a class discussion.

3. Use a digital camera to document the stages of an experiment to show proof of the final result. The images can be inserted into MS Word as a part of the report or into a PowerPoint presentation to share with the class.

4. Use Excel or Timeliner to create an electronic timeline of a lifecycle, an experiment, or a chemical reaction. Ideas: the life cycle of a frog or examples of mitosis could be illustrated in a timeline. Use clipart or digital images to enhance the timeline.

5. Use Excel to create conversion spreadsheets for measurements.

6. Use student email (eChalk) to gather information from experts (http://njnie.dl.stevens-tech.edu/askanexpert.html).

7. Create a digital insect or leaf collection or classroom encyclopedia using images from the Internet or digital photos taken by the students.

8. Use PowerPoint or web design software to create a virtual field trip of a biome, a cell, or the digestive system. Be creative, and the kids will love it.

9. Use MS Paint or drawing tools in MS Office to have students create diagrams of cell processes or chemical reactions. Use the custom animation features in PowerPoint to bring them to life.

10. Use TimeLiner to create and illustrate time lines for science, history, evolution, size, weight, distance, and temperature comparisons.
