Software Recommendations for Use
in Special Education

Browser
This is a software program that can be downloaded from the Internet
for $12.95. Students highlight the text on a web page and the
program reads it aloud to them using different fun voices.
Inspiration and Kidspiration
These programs provide graphic representation for
students when organizing writing assignments.
WordQ
This software uses word prediction to suggest words and to give
text to speech feedback.
Dragon Dictate
This software creates text from speech and can operate computer
commands with voice activation.
Storybook Weaver Deluxe This is software for
all elementary age students to use to create stories with added
graphics, sounds and text to speech capabilities.
Picture It
This is a software that teachers can use to create picture-supported
documents for students who have difficulty linking images and
words.
PixWriter
This software promotes successful early writing experiences. Young
students write by selecting pictures and word buttons while built-in
speech gives them immediate feedback on their selections.
CoWriter
This is a word prediction software that also helps students make
appropriate word choices to write higher-quality sentences.
Write Outloud
This is an easy-to-use word processor that gives immediate speech
feedback as students type words, sentences and paragraphs.
Boardmaker
This is a graphics database containig over 3,000 PIcture Communication
Symbols (from PCS Books I, II, and III) in bitmapped clip art
form. (There is no networked license.)
