Software Information

There are two main types of software used in education:
Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) / Drill and Practice
This software is used to support curriculum objectives through
drill and practice (Math Blaster), enrichment (the Tree House)
and reference (CD-ROM encyclopedias). Much CAI software is designed
for educational use and includes a means of reporting student
progress.
Tool / Open-ended
This software is used to complete a task using the unique capabilities
and power of computers. Many of these applications (programs)
are not specifically designed for the classroom but serve as the
software tools in today's workplace: word processors, desktop
publishing, drawing, and spreadsheets. These are frequently used
educationally with all ages. There are many software programs
now designed for education that are tool or open-ended (Inspiration,
KidPix)
Department of Educational Technology's Philosophy on Software
in Education
We believe that software used in an educational setting should
further the curriculum, help expand a student’s knowledge
of a subject, and enable students to build higher-order thinking
skills. Learning should be “authentic” and teachers
should use software that allows for this type of exploration.
Ideal software is open-ended and engaging, allowing students
to discover, build critical thinking skills and use their creativity.
Drill and practice (CAI) software should only be used in a limited
capacity in the classroom. Student construction must take on a
larger role in classroom technology.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in
creative expression and knowledge." Albert Einstein
