"To achieve a 25 percent penetration rate in U.S. homes, it took 35 years for the telephone, 26 yearsfor television, 16 years for personal computers, seven years for the Internet, and three years for personal digital assistants (PDAs)."

Willard R. Daggett, Ed.D.

"My fear is that our
schools are so focused on today’s battles - teaching to the tests - that our students are not receiving the education they need for the world in which they will live."

Willard R. Daggett, Ed.D.

"The U.S. fared poorly overall, coming in 21st among 29 member countries in math and 24th in problem solving, with an overall average of 483 (versus the survey average of 500).
This study supports what we have been finding for over a decade: U.S. curriculums need to focus more on application and relevance, not just academic rigor, so our students are prepared to compete in tomorrow's global workplace."

Differentiating Instruction Using Technology

Differentiating instruction is an important element in CCSD's Coherent Curriculum. It is not a recipe or instructional strategy, but a philosophy. When teachers differentiate instruction, they adjust their teaching according to the needs of the learner. Technology can support differentiating efforts in the classroom. With differentiation strategies in mind, teachers can create lessons and online activities, challenge learners, and assess student needs. This page is a resource for differentiating classroom instruction.

Tools for Implementing Differentiation

Differentiating instruction starts with a strong understanding of students. A teacher must know each student's educational strengths and weaknesses, learning styles, and interests. Therefore, assessment is a necessary component of differentiation.

Assessment Resources

Teacher Resources

Teachers can differentiate instruction in three ways: by process, by product or in the content. The following resources are meant to help teachers get started in any of these areas.

Filamentality
http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/
Knowledge Network Explorer’s Filamentality is a tool that allows web searches to find good Internet links to use as a classroom activity. Teachers can create a Filamentality or use an existing one by searching the database. Better yet, have students create a Filamentality to demonstrate their understanding of concepts.

TrackStars
http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/
Simply collect Web sites, enter them into TrackStar, add annotations for students. Teachers have an interactive, online lesson called a Track. Create a Track or use one of the thousands already made by other educators. Search the database by subject, grade, theme, or standard for a quick and easy activity. There is a fun Track already made for each day of the year, too!

Examples
• Characteristics of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells (science 9-12) http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/ts/themes/si9-12/index_si9.html
• Winnie-the-Pooh and Friends (language arts k-4) http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/ts/themes/elk-4/index_elk.html
• Three Branches of Government (social studies 5-8) http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/ts/themes/ss5-8/index_ss5.html

etvStreamlineSC: United Streaming Video (This site will be active fall 2005.) http://www.myetv.org/education/streamlinesc/
Use videos found at this site to create lessons for students. Not only are there hundreds of videos here, but there are Teacher Guides and Blackline Masters to accompany most of the videos. There is a search engine that allows searches by keyword, grade, subject, topic, or even SC curriculum standard. There is also an image library here that includes pictures of the Civil War, Egypt, and cultures, for example.
